Social Studies - Ms. Gruber
8th grade social studies covers American history from the 1880s to the present. First quarter we will pick up where 7th grade left off discussing industrial expansion in the aftermath of the Civil War. During first quarter we will also cover immigration, imperialism, and the Progressive Era. Second quarter we will examine United States' involvement in World War I. Then we will move into a discussion of the interwar years leading up to World War II. Third quarter, the study of World War II and the Holocaust will coincide with a research paper and the reading of Holocaust literature in Language Arts. Third and fourth quarters we will also cover the postwar years including the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement. The year will conclude with an exploration of modern American and world issues.
You will learn to "think like historians." This includes skills like critical thinking, close reading, and crafting an argument. The goal of this course is for you to see how the past has helped to shape the present and to understand your own role in shaping the future.
