Banned Book Week Enrichment
Each year, during the last week in September, the American Library Association shines a light on literature that has been banned or challenged across the country by holding Banned Book Week, an event that is recognized at libraries and bookstores in the United States. This year’s event is being held from September 25th to October 1st.
In an effort to raise awareness about Banned Book Week and the works they focus on, the enrichment project for 8th grade consists of you and your child choosing a book from the Banned or Challenged Book List (http://www.ala.org/bbooks/about), having your child read the book, making notes along the way about sections they think would have led to the book being questioned and/or banned. (Feel free to read the book with your child and discuss it along way.)
The final project would be a book report about the chosen work that would include:
2. A brief history of why, where and when the book was banned or challenged.
3. Their opinion of the book.
4. A statement about whether they agree or not with the reasons it was banned.
This will be due on December 1st and can consist simply of a paper or perhaps a display done on posterboard or in the form of a Powerpoint presentation
